On Saturday, February 13, 2015 at 4:00 pm, at the Hotchkiss Library of Sharon, author Fern Hammer will read and sign copies of her book. Snapshots of White Bread America is a novella-length memoir about an eight-year-old girl growing up in Sharon in the 50s. The story follows Fern’s life for twelve months, from mid-summer 1955 to her party celebrating her ninth year at the end of the school year in June 1956. The events are ordinary and the physical setting has an almost Dick-and-Jane storybook aura to it, but it is Fern’s detailed observations that engage the reader. Underneath the commonplace objects and routines there is a thread of silence and familial tension. Although we don’t learn the exact questions, we yearn to know the answers.

Fern has entertained herself by writing stories and journal entries for years. This is her first published book. She grew up in Sharon, a small town in the Northeast, where much of White Bread America takes place.
