Opening Art Reception - Tracy Morgan

Tracy Morgan
Devotion

Saturday June 2nd - Sunday July 1st 2018

Please join us on Saturday June 2nd, from 5:30–8:00 pm for an opening reception for Devotion, an exhibition by Tracy Morgan.

Standard Space is pleased to present Devotion, a solo show by Tracy Morgan. Tracy Morgan is a self-taught painter whose work explores the tensions inherent in the human interaction with nature. Working in acrylics on plywood, she juxtaposes lush flowers with bold patterns and gestural strokes. Glimpses of ferns show through veils of pale blue, black-and-white checkerboards bisect a riot of dahlias, vases are sketched in delicate lines of white paint. She creates a world where visual and physical texture intermingle: curls of leaves, layered petals, and smooth stripes weave amongst thick swathes of paint and thin washes of color.

Morgan begins her paintings by working from life, then layers patterns over her carefully rendered plants and floral arrangements until even the flowers begin to take on an abstract edge. The joy with which she paints comes through in the finished pieces—in the bright reds, luscious pinks, mint greens, and aquamarines, and in the movement and vitality of her brushstrokes. Her eye for color, honed throughout her years in the fashion industry, yields unexpected and beautiful combinations. She works intuitively and fearlessly, making up the rules as she goes along, and finding a delicate balance between looseness and control, between the dreamlike and the realistic, the ephemeral and the exact.

Tracy Morgan is a Brooklyn-based artist and set designer for the fashion industry. She was a guest artist at Art Central Hong Kong in 2016, and recently had a solo show at Bergdorf Goodman and was part of a group show at Gallery @ 46 (Hudson, NY).

Standard Space is a gallery in Sharon, CT, exhibiting contemporary artwork by emerging and mid-career artists working in diverse media. It was founded by Theo Coulombe in 2017 to foster conversations between artists in the New York region and the Litchfield County community. With six shows annually, as well as a flat file program, Standard Space presents innovative artwork and robust visual thinking to a broad audience.
